ABOUT BARF / Raw Feeding

"B.A.R.F", “Biologically Appropriate Raw Food” or “Bones And Raw Food” are all terms for the practice of feeding your dog a diet that his ancestors would have eaten; raw food. It consists of uncooked meat, bones and offal (organs). It’s what dogs were made to digest... We've never seen a wolf use a camp fire to cook his tea, have you?!

It’s not as easy as feeding your dog the food you would eat before you cook it, but it’s not far off. It’s all about the correct portions. On average it is advised (but please remember each dog is different) that one days portion should be 80% meat, 10% bone, 10% offal. For more information on this we suggest you do some of your own research on the internet e.g. articles or forums etc.

There are different ways to feed a BARF diet:

  • DIY – sectioning the portions out yourself to reflect approx 80:10:10 ... this could be raw meaty bones with extra meat and offal.

  • Completes - a pre made 80:10:10

  • Whole Prey - feeding the animal as it comes, e.g. a whole rabbit, so fur, head, ears and all!

It is important to do what’s best for you and your pet - not all dogs tolerate 10% bone and 10% offal, some need a bit less of one, bit more of the other, less of both or more of both... it’s about balance or the “perfect poo” (we won't go into detail here in case you’re eating your tea! But we will be doing a blog post on this topic very soon!). Completes don’t work for everyone, but some people don’t want the hassle or have the time for DIY or the Prey model diet, but that’s not to say you can’t ever do it!

Starting a raw diet can be overwhelming, but here at Hounds Kitchen we want to make the transition as easy as we can. We are happy to help, so if you give us a ring or drop us a message we'll do what we can to assist with any questions or queries.

If you do fancy changing over to a raw food diet for your dog and you've got a spare 10 minutes, it's best to come in to our shop (Huntley Street, Warrington - click here for full address details) and have a chat with us.

We pride ourselves on giving our help with NO pressure. We’ve had many customers come in for a chat and leave empty handed, going away to think about it and then come back to stock up. We would prefer that, as it’s a bit of a change to feeding dry food (you need a bit of freezer space for one) you need to be 100% happy with it before committing to the change, we want repeat happy customers not customers who have been talked into it without being fully on board and it not go right

Not into raw feeding or BARF? Don’t worry! We understand it’s not for everyone, we have dry food that’s 80% meat and cold pressed, 90% meat wet food and a big selection of natural healthy 100% meat treats for dogs.

Still got a few questions about BARF / Raw Feeding? We'll be posting blogs & FAQs on all things Raw really soon! Be sure to keep checking the website or sign up for all the latest HK news here.
